Artificial Grass: How to Survive on the "Plastic" Pitch and Not Destroy Your Gloves?

It used to be simple. You either played on mud or on cinders. Anyone who experienced a cinder pitch remembers those burnt palms and gloves that looked like they'd been attacked by a grater after two sessions. Times have changed, and cinders have been replaced by modern artificial grass. It's green, soft, and looks great. But make no mistake – for goalkeeper gloves, it's still the ultimate challenge.

Today, artificial turf isn't just a topic for winter training. According to statistics, hundreds of new pitches with 3rd and 4th generation artificial surfaces have been built in recent years. For many clubs, it's now the primary training ground for 10 months of the year.

What does this mean for you? That your gloves face the "enemy" much more often than before.

Why is artificial turf a "killer" of latex?

When you play on natural grass, the palm latex slides over blades full of water. On artificial turf, it's different. Here are the three main reasons why gloves wear out faster:

  1. High friction and heat: Artificial grass is basically plastic (polyethylene). When the palm contacts the surface, huge friction is generated. Did you know that during a fast dive, the temperature at the point of contact can briefly increase so much that the fine pores of the latex literally bake shut?
  2. Sandpaper in the grass: To keep the grass standing, it's filled with silica sand or rubber granules. These tiny balls act as micro-abrasives. They get into the palm and mechanically grind away the latex piece by piece.
  3. Dry surface: Artificial turf is rarely ideally wet. Dry plastic "scuffs" much more than damp grass.
Detail of HG 2.0 latex after contact with an artificial surface shows why a denser compound resists abrasion better.
HG 2.0 uses denser latex that better handles the friction and abrasive granules on artificial grass.

The Solution Called HG 2.0: What's the trick?

At BU1, we responded to this challenge with the HG (Hard Ground) 2.0 series. We won't promise you miracles – even the best gloves in the world will wear out on artificial turf sooner or later. But with HG 2.0, we're meeting that challenge head-on.

  • Denser latex compound: The palm on HG 2.0 models isn't as "spongy" as purely match models. It has a more closed structure that resists tearing and abrasion better.
  • Balanced grip: It often happens that "durable" gloves are long-lasting but slippery as plastic. HG 2.0 retains excellent grip, so you can rely on them even in a competitive match.

Our tips on how to extend the life of (not only) HG gloves:

1. "Waking up" after unboxing

New gloves have an invisible factory film on them to prevent them from drying out in the box. Gently wash them in lukewarm water before your first training session. This "opens" the pores of the latex and activates the grip. Without this, they will be slippery on artificial turf.

2. Getting up on fists

This is the simplest trick that costs you nothing. When you get up from the ground, try to lean on closed fists instead of open palms. This way, the backhand of the glove takes the contact, which is much less prone to damage than the precious latex on the palm.

3. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Even on artificial turf, wet latex lives longer. Keep a water bottle by the goal and moisten your palms occasionally. Water reduces the friction and heat that destroys the latex.

Junior HG 2.0 model focused on durability during frequent contact between gloves and ground in training.
For junior goalkeepers, palm durability is crucial because they tend to put more weight on their palms when getting up.

Our specialists for your training sessions:

  • BU1 Light HG 2.0 – Adult: Lightness and durability in one. Ideal for goalkeepers who spend several days a week on artificial turf and want a model that lasts longer than standard match gloves.
  • Junior BU1 Light HG 2.0 – Kids: For children, artificial turf is the toughest because they often lean on their palms when moving on the ground. The HG variant will help them enjoy the game longer without worn-through fingers.

Artificial grass no longer has to mean the end of your favorite gloves. Just choose the right "weapon" and know how to take care of it!
